Zurich. Land of "Ka-ching"

Money.

Zurich.

To go to Zurich, you must have the money.

Zurich is the most expensive city in the world. And on 23rd March, my Deutschkurs class had a trip to Zurich.

Herr Glanzmann and Frau Bolliger were the Chaperones for the trip. We met at the Bahnhof, on Gleis 4, the same place and time when we first met everyone on the first day. It's really unbelievable that Deutschkurs has ended. The trip is entirely on our own expense. So we bought the train tickets ourselves.

It wasn't a long train ride to Zurich. Maybe because I was chatting wit Jun Khee the whole way, I didn't realize. When we reached Zurich, we were like a bunch of Sakais. Seriously. We were all OHHing and AHHing at everything. The train station is HUGE. You know how many platforms are there? Well, neither do I :P But there's a lot. I remember seeing Gleis 70+ or something. Go google. I'm lazy.

We started by walking to the dock, where we were supposed to take the boat for a roundtrip around the lake and see Zurich. Unfortunately, being the Sakais that we are, we spent so much time snapping photos at the buildings and with each other, we were late to the dock. So Herr Glanzmann suggested that we go check out the Church.

The church is amazing. Well, it's not the type that has mural on the ceilings, but this is the first time I actually stepped into a REAL church, not like those modern types in Malaysia. Apparently the church was almost 100 years old, and the windows were painted by one of the most famous artists in Europe back in 1907. After that, we walked to a restaurant, and we were a bit of trouble for the waiter. Us being there in Zurich, and being here in Switzerland, we're always very price-conscious. And because they had to rush our lunch as we had to catch the boat, it made the waiter very uptight. We were asking "Wie viel kostet das?" and had to waste time to think whether it's worth ordering or not. Harry ended up ordering the speciality of the day (and the most expensive dish), Fish, and Maruly, Khee and I ordered the Meat. Panyada and Will ordered Sandwiches for themselves. I don't know about the other table, and we were sitting outside. The sky was clear and the weather was warm. It would be foolish of us if we chose to sit indoors, away from the beauty of nature. The food was superb, and the prices were OKAY if it was to be in Malaysian Ringgit. The fish costs 22Fr, meat 17.90fr, and the sandwich was 10fr. Harry ordered first, so he didn't know about the others' price. I ordered second, and asked about the price of the meat. Panyada and Will weren't planning to order, but then the waiter asked if they wanted sandwiches, which costs 10fr. In the end, they gave in to hunger. Our stomach were all growling like they were in a battle or something.

And then we were too slow, and was about to miss the boat again. So Herr Glanzmann suggested again to take the next boat, and bring us to the top of Zurich. "You were never in Zurich if you've never been there", he says. It was a long walk, but it was worth it. The scenery was nice, and there was a playground, trees which are bald, and 2 giant chess set. People ACTUALLY are playing chess with the giant chess set. They had to carry the pieces around and walk back to the end of the chess board. But what made it really, REALLY worth it was, hehehehheehehehehheehe, 4 lengzais from Germany. We even had a photo with them. Pei San was so daring, she just went straight up and asked if we could take a photo with them. I think it was very obvious that we were heads over heels with them cause the photo with them were only us girls. The guys were shaking their heads and embarrassed of what we're doing with the Germans.

The boat ride was boring. All we were seeing were houses around the lake. I even fell asleep when I got the chance to sit down. We had a few funny moments, here and there. Frau Bolliger said Harry looks like George Clooney, which was SUCH A LIE. Then she said he was too sweet to be George Clooney, and Herr Glanzmann sang out "Roses are red, Violets are blue. Sugar is sweet, so are you."

After the boat ride, we bid farewell to our 2 chaperones, and walked back to the trainstation to catch the Tram 11 to the park and meet up with all the other AFSers. Our legs were killing us, and when we met 3 Thai girls at the Tram stop. We got on the tram, and the tram took us to where we were at first, the dock. We were blaming Harry for being the Genius to bring us back all the way to the train station, which was a long walk, to be back there at the exact same spot. Met up with the other Malaysians, and I saw Michael from the orientation camp there. He's kind of the closest friend I met in the orientation, not including the other Malaysians and the people from Deutschkurs. He's a maniac. He knows Japanese, French, English and a little of Chinese. Apparently his interest is learning languages.

I went to Coop to buy beer. We shared a 10-pack with Will. He took 5 and we took 5. It costs only 1fr per bottle, which was very cheap. But the beer tastes awful. I was red when I finished the beer, and a bit hyped. We also met more asians, which we are very happy of. We get to speak CHINESE to other people besides among us Malaysians, and we also met a girl from Hong Kong. Immediately me and Khee were speaking Cantonese with her. Ahh.... it's like we finally released the knot in out tongues.

We left early, but a lot later than planned. We had chinese food at the train station, and it was the most delicious asian food we've had since being here. I ordered fried rice, which costs 9fr. It was a big plate, and I managed to finish it without any problem. There were soy sauce, too. Yes! So after dinner, was supposed to go check out their H&M, but they close early. Wow seriously. If all the shops in Malaysia closed to early, they wouldn't survive at all. Oh well.

And Pei San, KC, Khee and I cramped in a photobooth and took a photo. It was fun :D The booth was so small, it could only fit me and Pei San. KC and Khee had to stand outside the booth and reach their head in to fit in the camera.

I'd post the photos, but I'm much much much to tired now. School's starting tomorrow. Wish me luck!!!

Updates.

Well quite a lot has been happening, and I haven't got the time to update much.

Or perhaps I was just lazy.

Anyways back to topic. So on 22nd of March, it was the last, LAST day of Deutschkurs. It's a Thursday. Yes.

So Deutschkurs begins as usual, but Panyada and us the Malaysians have to do a presentation about our country. Actually it was supposed to be the day before, but there wasn't enough time, I think. I don't know cause I left early.

After the presentation, Herr Glanzmann distributed out a test. A end of Deutschkurs test. He gave us a 10 minutes break before the test, and us, being typical Asians, took out our books, and was cramming all the grammar notes we learned whereas the others were just enjoying themselves. Surprisingly, the test was the same as the one we had on the first day. This time, I UNDERSTOOD THE QUESTIONS. Doing those questions made me realize, how far we came to since the first day. I ACTUALLY know how to do those questions, whereas on the first day I had absolutely NO IDEA what was going on. I felt proud, and I felt like I finally achieved something here. My German may not be good, but at least I know, that I've learned some.

Apparently Will was also supposed to do his presentation on Peru, too, but he was so late, he arrived when we're about to go for lunch.

We had our LAST kebab in Olten that day. Pei San, Jun Khee, Panyada, Harry and I went for Kebab. Will and Maruly came along, too, but they didn't buy any and left early. We sat at a booth and enjoyed what seemed to be our last kebab, cause I don't think I'll be going to Olten anymore. So, instead of 2 people sharing 1 kebab, we all ordered one for ourselves. I remember the conversation that day was about studies. About Australians, and how different their education systems are with Malaysians. And there were some funny stuffs, too, but now I couldn't remember any.

So we were late back to class, and Frau Bolliger was taking over. She said we had to stay 5 minutes later, because we were 5 minutes late. But then, she let everyone off at 2pm, which was 20 minutes earlier than the schedule. Going off at 2pm, gives me the time to walk to Coop with Maruly, buy a Caprisone juice, and walk slowly back to the Bahnhof. On the way we met Harry, and he responded to us when we shout AUSTRALIAN from far. I looked around.

I realized, this will be my last time to be walking back from Deutschkurs. The building that was under construction, the road, which the workers have been fixing since the first week we came.. I wonder when will be my next time to be here, in Olten? Maybe I could be one of the oldies, coming back to visit the newbies in Fall?

And we managed to take the 2.30pm train. Which was the FAST train. It arrives at Luzern Bahnhof at 3.10pm, which gives me time to walk to the other train, and catch the train which was an hour earlier than my usual ride. So that makes me reach Hasle at around 4pm, which was 1 hour earlier than usual. Isn't it amazing, how 20 minutes can make such a difference?

So I walked to the Post Office, that day, because I have time. I was exceptionally happy. Maybe because I was still happy about my SPM results? Or perhaps the thought of going to Zurich lifts me up? And the funniest thing happened in the post office. As I was taking out the letter and postcards from my bag, I saw Micha, my "host-cousin", whom is also my neighbor. Then I look at the lady at the counter again, and she looked at me when I said "Hallo" to the boy, and we both realized who we were staring at. The lady was actually Sandra, Andre's sister-in-law, Micha's mother and also my neighbor. And then we were like OH HI! I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE YOU!

And one thing. I don't think Switzerland has stamps. What they did to my letter was they printed out a sticker, with a scanning code on it, and pasted it on my letter and postcards. Heh. Guess the kids here won't be suffering like my cousin and I did back in primary school, where we were forced to join Stamp Collecting class.

Lucky kids.

11 Years, just for this moment.

21st March 2012

GUESS! GUESS! GUESS! GUESS!!

YES! It's SPM RESULTS DAY!

If you guessed it correct, Hooray for you :D

If you guessed it wrong.... You suck.

But I couldn't be in school to get my results, I couldn't be in school, and experience the almost-heart-attack moment with my friends, who are all probably having the same almost-heart-attack. Instead, I'm here, snoring of my worries.

So actually I woke up at 4.30am. And I was sort of pissed that my parents couldn't attend the results announcement, even though Cempaka set it at 1pm, which was like super late. Bad timing I guess. So I just ask myself, "Why are you awake at this time?" and I went back to sleep, in a bad mood :\

And so at 6am or so, I was really really blur that time. I don't know who called me, Ding or Suwei, and asked if I wanted to skype while they take their results. Didn't want to trouble them, so I just said no. And went back to sleep, trying not to think about anything.

And now. 6.20am.

Ding called me. Well, I've set ringtones for most of my friends, and his song was 那些年, which was REALLY loud. I practically jumped up, but before I could answer the phone, he hung up. That time I was QUITE awake. Then Suwei texted me.

And I screamed.

And I sweared. (Sorry mom & dad)

Really, I sweared. At the phone. Not because of anger, but surprised.

Funny, right? Swearing when you're surprised. Honestly I was more surprised than happy, cause I was still processing WHAT WAS GOING ON.

I got straight A's. First. Time. In. My. Life.

Then I called my dad. On the phone, I was like, "DAD, I GOT STRAIGHT A'S!" and he said "What? Six A's? Ok lah.." and I was "NO, NO!! STRAIGHT A's!! STRAIGHT!" and then he paused for a second.. "OH! STRAIGHT A's AH????"

See? No one, even my parents expected I get straight A's.

I'm not trying to show off here, if you think so, just leave.

And then Ding texted me about the news, and then Qiang texted a Congratz to me. My mom then called me, with the rest of the family there, because they just came back from Thailand, and I was crying, so hard. I finally realized how those people feel, when they win an award or competition and cried like mad. And I spent rest of my day, processing what was going on, till now. I ACTUALLY had a fear of going to sleep, cause I feared that this was just a dream, and when I sleep, I wake up with shitty results. That's how paranoid I get. I called mom on the way to the Klubschule, and asked her about my results in detailed. I was walking and Maruly and I was gasping the whole time. I was like "WALAO! SERIOUSLY? REALLY?" and speaking Cantonese the whole time. She was confused to the max.

Okay so now back to life in der Schweiz.

We had to do a presentation about our own country for Deutschkurs, IN GERMAN. I spent the last night searching for information in the internet and translating everything with what I know and with the help of Google Translator. And I didn't really have time to talk to my friends that time. But then, I left Deutschkurs early, cause I needed to go to the immigration office to settle my permit and all. I left Deutschkurs at around 11.30am and caught the 11.49 train back to Luzern. First time taking bus here in Switzerland, and I almost went the opposite direction. Luckily I asked the bus driver and I NOW UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BIT OF GERMAN and he said "you have to take the bus at the other side of the road", WHICH I UNDERSTOOD. Praise Buddha!! And so I went to the other side of the road and took the bus number 7. Got of at Bundesplatz and I walked to the immigration office.

Outside the immigration office, a black guy who was really confused ask me where is the immigration office, in English. I pointed to the building and he asked what time does it open. I went to check and it says that they have lunch break till 1pm. I checked my watch and it was already 1pm. I guess he came before 1pm and waited till now. Then he asked, which floor is the office, and I looked at the building. The information was all in German, and I UNDERSTOOD! HELL YEAH! It said "Immigration office, 1st Floor" AND I UNDERSTOOD! So I told the guy it's at the first floor, and I said I'd go check out and tell him. Well the block of the building were all glass, so when I reached the office, I pointed to him that the office is there. I feel so proud. Please ignore me :)

So at the office, they checked my passport, took a photo (which was a terrible photo), took my fingerprints and my signature. It was so high-tech, I sit in a box and do everything in there. The lady was saying "Okay, now I'm going to take a picture. Please look in front at the camera" "Okay, now I'm gonna need your fingerprints. Put your both index finger on the purple screen in front of you." "Okay, now I need your signature. Please take the special pen and sign on the gray pad in front of you". And everything was done within 10 minutes.

Since my train wasn't until 1 hour later, I walked back to the train station instead of taking the bus. I even had time to stop by a book shop and check out the books. I went to the bank as well. And then I went to another book shop in the Bahnhof, and they were selling English books. I wanted to buy The Hunger Games SO SO SO SO MUCH, and it was about 16frs only. Apparently the German version was more expensive than the English one. So I think I'm gonna go buy it soon. I think I'm gonna buy both versions, and read both together, so I won't need to take out my dictionary and search words by words. Instead I could just read both and roughly understand the sentences. Initially I didn't want to buy the English version, cause I wanted to improve my German, but then I desperately wanna know the story.. So I guess I'm gonna go buy both later.

Reached home very early, and skyped with friends and family. The epic skype was with Qiang. He was telling me about the whole gang's reaction when they found out my results from Wei Kei. Nobody believed at first. And I share-screened with Qiang to show him my results, and his face. HIS FACE. I shall post a picture.

I think you'd have to click to see a clearer image.

He was also updating me about every other people in SMKBBSP. He's like the bridge between me and ma SMKBBSP peeps. I shall now name the bridge, Bridog. Bridge + Dog = Bridog. Yay.

So I guess that's all for the day.

And I had Curry Bratwurst (Sausage) for lunch at the Bahnhof. Delicious :D

Introducing...

The Raclette!!!

Getting ready for Raclette

It's a Swiss dish, and it tastes awesome!!!!!!

The peeled potatoes

The special cheese for Raclette

The oven thingy, which I don't know what it's called

It's melted cheese with potatoes, and sometimes with pickles. Sprinkle some Paprika and salt on the cheese with potatoes, and it's done.

First, place the cheese in the pan and put it inside the thingy for it to melt.

Then, cut the potatoes into smaller pieces like so.

Next, pour the cheese onto the potatoes, and sprinkle with spices.

If you're ever coming to Switzerland, you MUST try this dish.

Malaysians in Luzern

So on Friday 16 March, there was a birthday party held by one of the AFS oldies. He invited every AFSers, oldies and newbies. Everyone was to meet in Luzern Bahnhof at 9pm.

So after Deutschkurs, Pei San, Jun Khee and I went to Luzern and met up with KC and Shu Chien. We planned to walk around Luzern before going to the party, and maybe shop for a little while. So we took the 2.49pm train from Luzern with Maruly, and it was still early when we reached, so we went to the Swisscom shop for JK to buy his phone reload. Maruly wanted to buy her phone simcard, but then she didn't have her passport, so she couldn't. Went back to the bahnhof to meet up with the rest of the gang.

Luzern is really really beautiful. There's a bridge, and the river is very very clear. There are a lot of swans, and the swans are amazing. And when you look further down from the bridge, you can see the Alps. The weather was good that day, chilly and breezy, not freezing and not too hot. The sky was clear, too, and the view of the Alps was perfect.

We went to C&A, and then H&M, and then some high end shoe store, which we had no idea, and KC went inside and started talking very very loudly, and the salesperson were angrily staring at us. We went into Coop, and searched for the "birthday present" for the birthday guy. Then we bought balloons as birthday message. We had dinner in the Coop Restaurant, and there's where the funniest part begins.

We were all sharing stories of our host families. KC's family is seriously interesting. He changed families already because the first family he had was a welcome family for only 1 week. We were all talking about how different things are here in Switzerland and back in Malaysia. We sat in a room and it was empty, so we could talk and laugh as loud as we can. Dinner was quite expensive, and some of the food wasn't satisfying.

In restaurant Coop with camera timer.

After dinner we walked back to the Bahnhof with Shu Chien so she could take her train back to Zurich. We stopped at the bridge to take some photos again, sampat photos :D

We went down to the shops in the Bahnhof and found seats, and Peisan and I were wearing heels, so we were super relieved. Blew the balloons and wrote birthday messages on the balloon. Saw Gabriel who was going to the same high school with me, and he was going to the party, too. When it was time, we went up to the Kiosk and met up with the other AFSers. A guy from the military, that what he said, came up to us and asked for a photo, then talked to us. He was really, really, really weird. And we were terrified of him. He was saying that he's playing a prank on someone about them arresting a US guy and takes a gun out or something. We looked at each other with the expression O.O

The gang with the "military guy". I was the photographer.

For some reasons, I did not go to the party in the end. I ended up taking the next train home to Hasle.

And on the next day, I was alone at home in the morning and after lunch. I went out to the garden and took some pictures of the pets. Rabbits, guinea pigs (I didn't manage to snap photos of them), ducks, and Kim the dog. It was a beautiful day out, and Kim is absolutely lovely! And later in the evening I received letters from Ding and Suwei. :')

Stepping into a new environment

So today Deutschkurs was normal. Will took my Orangina and changed the OR to V and canceled out the N, so it spells Vagina.

Nice, Will.... Real nice...

And he wrote 100% Pussy Juice, if you can see it..

That's what we do in Deutschkurs. :D

After school, I took an earlier train home, and I had 45 minutes to kill before my train back to Hasle. So I decided to walk around Luzern.

I never knew Luzern was so frigging beautiful. There's a river and there are swans, a lot of swans in the river. After crossing the bridge, there were a lot of shops. I found C&A, H&M and The Body Shop. I went into The Body Shop and searched for the Vanila Perfume. KISIAO it costs the same as Malaysia, but in Swiss Francs. Back home in Malaysia it costs about RM20+, and here it costs 21.90fr. I ran out of the store immediately.

So today at 8pm, Fränzi and I went to the Kantonschule Schüpfheim to meet up with Herr Jöhl, to settle with my admittance stuff. The school is really awesome. I have no other words to describe it. It looks really modern outside, but inside it's old. Not old in the way that it's spooky and out of maintenance, but old in a very unique way. It's like the 70s or 80s school we see in those TV Shows. It's quite small, actually, and unlike schools in Malaysia, they don't have a assembly hall. Everything is indoors, unlike Malaysia where the corridors are outside. Herr Jöhl is really friendly and nice. He's the English teacher, so he can speak English very very very well. He explained everything to me, my timetable, my subjects, my student ID card, my lunch, and the rules in the school.

Okay. So since the school is small, they don't have their own cafeteria. The students have to walk to another building down the street to have their lunch. Our student ID is similar to our Smartcard back in Cempaka, except you have to top-up the ID card in order to buy a voucher with the card in school, and bring the voucher to the cafeteria, and give the voucher to the workers there, and you can eat everything for 8fr. Well, that's what Herr Jöhl told me. And the sports, I think I'd have to walk to the building opposite for sports. I also have a locker (YAY) to put my shoes and coat and stuff. Apparently, the school has a rule that we have to wear house shoes inside the school, and not the usual shoes we wear everyday. So every morning we have to remove our shoes and put it in our locker and change into house shoes. I'm having the 2nd last locker in the school. The school has only 216 lockers, and I'm using the 215th one.

So I'm placed in class 3Ka. Plus, in my school (future-school), there are already altogether 4 exchange students, and all of them are already in my class. There are 2 from AFS - Marcos from Dominican Republic and Gabriel from Brazil, Isaac from California and a girl from the French part of Switzerland. So far I've met the 3 guys but not the exchange girl. My class teacher was the conductor for the orchestra in the musikal - Die Schöne und das Biest.

And after that he took us around the school for a "guided tour". They have different rooms for different subjects, and the rooms are slightly bigger than the classrooms in Cempaka, but slightly smaller than the classrooms in SMKBBSP.

Oh yeah, and my student ID looks awesome. They used the photo I submitted for AFS, which is a photo that I quite like :D It's a photo of me before the Inter-house Dance competition last year, so I guess that this is my best student ID ever :D I'll take a photo of it and post it on some time later.

Oh and I have a photo of the delicious kebab.

Don't be deceived by the looks of it. Belum try belum tau, lepas try lagi mau.

Skifahren in Sörenburg

So today (11 March 2012) is my first day skiing in Switzerland.

My host mom (HM) brought me to Sörenburg to ski. Since the whole family can ski, I just borrow gears from them.

My host mom lent me ski boots, ski trousers, ski socks, ski gloves, a ski helmet and a ski jacket. And also of course the skis and the sticks. I love the ski trousers. It's just a plain black pants, but I love the cutting. The ski boots were a pain to get them on, and it weighs a ton!! (figure of speech there, mind you)

So we packed our stuff and we started our 30 minutes drive to Sörenburg. The road there is very very narrow, but seriously, Switzerland people's driving skills are simply AWESOME. They could drive so fast at what back in Malaysia would be a single lane, but it was actually a double lane here. They can drive so close to the cliff and so close to the wall and avoid the incoming cars.

When we arrived, the hill was crowded. We went into the ski office, cause my HM is a part-time ski instructor there. I wore the boots in the office, and met a friend of my HM, who works as a ski instructor as well. So then we took the ski-lift up to the mountain. As a first-timer, I should actually take the Gondelbahn up the hill, but then it was too far away and the ski-lift was just next to us. Plus, I requested to take the ski-lift, cause it looks just so COOL! Actually the ski-lift is very dangerous for me. It was very different than the one in China, cause the slope in China was so low, you need to push yourself downhill. Here, one mistake for me and I could break my leg or just roll down the hill. And you all know how "careful" I am. The ski-lift is fast, but exciting. And the hardest part is when you want to get off the ski-lift. One person has to pull the seat down and the other one has to ski away from the lift. For a first-timer, I'm surprised I get to release myself from the ski-lift. We reached *almost* the top of the mountain.

We went to the kiddies area first. It was a bit embarrassing. The little kids, around 4-5 years old, could ski so much better than me! They were doing curves and braking magnificently, and I was there, all sloppy and shaky. So when my HM taught me how to brake and slow down, we went to the REAL slope.

At first, I was doing alright. My HM was skiing backwards so she could keep an eye on me. She was also bending and holding my skis together, cause my skis were all tangled up if I was skiing alone. I don't know what happened then, I fell down on a split. Believe me, it hurts 10 times more when you're wearing skis. You couldn't move your legs because of the skis, and all I did there was sitting in that awkward split yelling "Leg! Leg! Leg!". I manage to get up, with the help of my HM, and my knee was hurting because of the fall. It felt like I twisted my knee, but I could still go on. We skied to another shorter ski-lift, which was located near the top of the mountain. The ski-lift could bring us back to where we got off at the first time, but a bit higher. So we skied down, and I was doing better. I could brake on my own and do a noob slight curve. Then we continued down to the ski-lift we took just now, and I was doing great :P But my legs were really tired, because I couldn't ski parallel. I needed to ski in a half-brake way so that I can go down slowly. And again to the ski-lift, and we took the ski-lift up again, and then now down to the restaurant on the hill. I was sweating a lot, by the way.

Took off our skis and placed them on the rack. I just feel that it's amazing you can just leave your skis and snowboards there, no matter how cheap or expensive, and have no worry that it'll get stolen. So we went into the restaurant, and I ordered Schweizbratwurst mit Pommes Frites, that means Swiss Sausage with French Fries. It costs 18fr. But it was a big portion.

And we sat at the table, with my HM's friend, who is a ski instructor for the disabled people. Sitting opposite me was a stranger, but people here in Switz are really friendly. He could just make a conversation with me, even though we do not know each other. It was a beautiful and sunny day, but I forgot to bring my specs along, so my eyes were hurting a little. There was a skirace earlier, and they were presenting the prizes when we were having lunch. The place was awesome. The weather is cold, but not freezing, and eating sausages outdoors enjoying the sun, and people all around were having a great time, despite the age groups.

My lunch :) It looked so delicious, I took a bite before I took this photo.

And so after lunch, we went to ski for a little while again. This time, I don't know why again, I fell down and slid through my HM's legs. So I was sliding downhill on my back, but my skis were still on the ground. So I was actually sitting down on my back and my HM was grabbing my hands. Thats made her ski backwards, and she had to bend down and she had to grab me upside down. I don't know if you understand, but it was hilarious. I bet the people around us were laughing non-stop. Luckily my HM is a skilled skier. I don't know how AGAIN, she managed to ski in front of me and block me. The slope was very steep, and she could block me and made us stop. My back was all snow, and I had difficulty standing up. And so after that, we took the ski-lift UP again, and skied back to the restaurant, grabbed our sticks and took the Gondelbahn down. The whole mountain was too difficult for me to ski, and I didn't want to risk anything by trying to ski down the whole mountain. Scary.

The Alps

The little "ants" that you see are actually people, skiing.

I used the shorter ski, and my HM used the longer one.

At the end, the wind was blowing so hard and cold, my face was numb like this. (Not even posing)

The bottom of the hill, and that's the mountain opposite the mountain I ski.

Sorry bout the bad quality photos. Didn't bring my DSLR along.

And for dinner, hehe, we had Raclette again :D That is simply delicious. You put a piece of cheese on a pan, and you put it inside the oven thingy till it melts, then pour the cheese on potatoes, then sprinkle it with spices and salt, and EAT. And today my HF poured a glass of wine for me. The wine was *smack* perfecto.

Die Schöne und das Biest.

So today (10 March 2012), I went for the musical "Beauty and the Beast" or as what they call here.. "die Schöne und das Biest".

It was in Escholzmatt, the village after Schüpfheim. Megi was waiting for me at the train station, and there we waited for another friend. Crap I forgot the name. I AM SO SORRY >< I'm really bad with names. After that we walked to the place where the musical is. Waited for Megi's boyfriend and then we went in.

So. This is the seating plan.

They were sitting at 84 and so. My seat : 193.

So yeah, you can guess it. I couldn't understand a single thing they were saying. It was very different than the one Cempaka did in 2010. Honestly speaking, I prefer the Cempaka one. I think that's cause my mind's set by Disney of how Beauty and the Beast is supposed to be, along with the songs from the movie like Beauty and the Beast, Belle, Gaston, A Change in Me (FAVOURITE). Their voice were amazing! But then the acting.. Well I couldn't really get what was going on, and AGAIN I say, that's cause my mind is set by Disney. This version of Beauty and the Beast was more of the original Beauty and the Beast, where Belle has 2 self-centered sisters and her father wasn't an inventor. The Gaston is very different, too. He wasn't as arrogant and that much of a windbag as the one portrayed in Disney. But that doesn't make him a better person. He was awkward with Belle and it's like he has no confidence when he's with Belle. And there were no Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Pott and Chip. There were only a cello, a chair (played by Isaac, an exchange student from America) and another thing which I don't know what it is :O And the Beast wasn't a hairy animal. It was more like the Phantom of the Opera.

I'm sorry, I'm criticizing the musical.

But my classmates said it was really really awesome. Maybe their dialog was superb, I don't know, cause they were speaking too fast for me to understand. Ah well.. At least now I know that there's more in the "Fairytale Industry" than Disney.

Oh and by the way, the names were different.

Belle = Bella
Gaston = Gustav

And there was no Le Fou. And there weren't strings in the orchestra.

So after the musical, I stayed back to meet some of my new schoolmates. I met Petra, Dario (who also lives in Hasle), and the exchange students! Markus from Dominican Republic, Gabriel from Brazil and Isaac from America. Markus and Gabriel are AFSers, too, and they're speaking really good German now. Gabriel refused to speak English with me, and only spoke to me in German, very slowly, and repeated a sentence for at least 3 times. Saw Pascal, too, whom Megi refers to him as the "one who likes dogs".

So around 11.15, we walked back to the train station and waited for the train.

SPEAKING OF TRAINS.

The ride to Escholzmatt was epic.

I walked to the train station quite early, cause I needed to buy the train ticket. While I was waiting, suddenly a black guy walked towards the train station, and looked at me with some kind of glance. It shook me a little. Then from the other side, came another black guy! He was randomly shouting HELLO when we was near the ticket machine, which was quite near me. Then the other black guy walked towards him, but they seem to not know each other. I admit I was scared, cause I've never seen any black guys in Hasle. Well, maybe that's because I don't go out much :P) Then the train came. I tried my best to look as calm as possible, but I walked to the train faster than any normal person. Bleh. I probably looked like an idiot.

AND on the train, a guy, who seemed to be drunk, asked me if I has any cigarettes, but in German. I couldn't understand at first, then he made the smoking gesture. I just shook my head. He has a dog, like a police dog or something. It was barking non-stop in the train when it's almost arriving in Schüpfheim. He was with another man, but that man wasn't stopping in Schüpfheim. The man and I got off in Escholzmatt, and he greeted Megi. Megi then told me, that guy is the art teacher in my school.

HOLY CRAP.

Luckily I didn't say anything or make any faces at him.

Back to what I was saying. I got off the train with Dario, who was living near from where I'm living. He knows the Schmid family, and his brother goes to the same school with Julia. We talked while walking home, and he speaks really good English. I checked my watch when we went separate ways, and it was almost 11.40pm. Wow. Back in Malaysia, who would dare to walk home ALONE from a train station at 11.40pm? I feel so brave here :D

That's all for 10th March. Tschuss!

BERN-A-SHOPPING-CALORY

Okay i don't know what the title means. It just came up. Today is the 9th of March.

So today. School was usual, again. It snowed so hard last night, there was snow all over town today. I walked to the train, VERY CAREFULLY, cause the road is all slippery with snow and ice. It didn't snow today, though. It was sunny.

So during lunch, we went to get our Kebabs. This time, 1 per person. IT WAS HEAVEN ON EARTH. I ordered the one with burito wrap, but it was super huge. I was SO full when I finished it. It was actually surprising that I actually get to finish the whole Kebab by myself. Oh man am I gonna get fat. There were oldies visiting our class today, too.

After school, I went to Bern with Pei San and Jun Khee. To shop :D

Well I bought my ticket in the morning, before school. The train ride to Bern was horrible. There were so many LONG tunnels and my ears were hurting a lot. When we got there, it really was jaw-dropping. It was so crowded! And it's just the train station! We looked around and bought the ticket back home to Hasle and Solothurn (Jun Khee). I almost bought the ticket back to Luzern, then from Luzern back to Hasle. Luckily before I pressed "Confirm", I saw the map, and Hasle was IN BETWEEN Luzern and Bern. LUCKILY. It costs 18fr to travel from Bern to Luzern but only 11.50fr from Bern to Hasle. And easier.

And so..

We went shopping in Bern. First we went H&M. I bought a cargo pants which costs 50fr. I wanted to buy 2 shirts but it was 10fr and 13fr. It was short sleeves so I thought I'd buy them when it's Spring or Summer. Then we went to check out the shoes. I tried on a lot of heels, and it was comfortable. I almost bought a 35fr ankle boots with heels, cause it looks absolutely amazing, but then I saw another combat boots. It was 70fr so I thought I'd just try it on just for fun. But then, I fell in love with that boots once I wore it, and couldn't resist to take it off. I called my mom (hehe) and asked her if it's okay if I bought them. She said it was okay, THEN I only took it off. Went to pay, happily, and then headed back to the train station. I had only 2 minutes to get from the central of the train station, to Gleis 3, where my train was. Luckily I made it in time.

So in the train, I took out the receipts and calculated Pei San's purchase, cause I paid for everything and she'll pay me back later. Then I noticed something. MY BOOTS ONLY COSTS 39.90fr!!!!! My soul was jumping with ecstasy, but of course, I remained silent in the train. Oh my god luckily I bought that pair of boots instead of the ankle ones. But then now when I'm writing this post, I'm starting to like that ankle boots. Oh well. I'll get it next next next time.

Reached home around 7.10pm or so. It was already dark, but it was nice to walk at night.

Oh and Thank you so so much Jun Khee, for helping us shop and take our stuffs and helped us search for the shoe sizes :D

And here are the photos.

8th March.

I know it's a different date when I'm writing this, but let's just pretend that today IS 8th of March.

So yeah. It's snowing today.

Quite heavily, I might add.

It snowed when I was walking to the train for school. It wasn't really cold, just about 2-3 degrees. I managed to catch a snowflake with my tongue, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. My whole body was snow, luckily I was wearing the waterproof windbreaker and not the trench coat my host mom lent me. Okay so to school it was a normal day. Lunchtime was awesome. Well we went to Migros to get something to eat, then Will came and brought us to a Kebab restaurant. Initially I thought Kebabs were like our Satays, but no, it wasn't. It was DELICIOUS! Will ordered the kebab with burito wrap, but ours was the pure kebab I guess. Pei San, Jun Khee and I were sharing 1 kebab cause we had some food before we went. I TELL YOU. That's gotta be the most delicious fast food here in Switzerland. It's actually muffin-like bread, and with veggies and LOTS and LOTS of Bacon I guess? I don't know what it is but all I know is that it is absolutely DELICIOUS! And the sauce. Oh god. How shall I begin with THE SAUCE. They gave us cocktail sauce, but you can add on other types of sauces. We took the chili sauce. OH GOD. That was the spiciest thing I've tasted since I've been here. It tasted like Thai Chili Sauce, which Panyada enjoyed it A LOT. Whoa it was like heaven on earth. I GOTTA bring my bro here sometimes cause HE IS GONNA LOVE IT. Or maybe I could courier some back to him :D

So after school, when I got off the train, it was snowing again, REALLY HEAVILY. I was practically covered in snow when I reached home. The snow flakes were huge, but it just makes it easier to catch with my tongue :P I probably look like some retarded fool trying sticking out my tongue while walking.

And I made a bank account here in Hasle. I couldn't find any HSBC bank so Fränzi took me to the bank here in Hasle to make a bank account. Raifessen.

So that's all for THIS day. Creating another to talk about 9th of March.

7th March 2012

So yeah, today is actually a normal normal day in der Schweiz.

So after school, I went to Coop to buy some... BASIC NECESSITIES. Like shampoo, conditioners, toothpaste, shower gel, and things girls need. If you know what I mean. And after I bought the stuff, I went outside and saw a whole gang of youngsters standing there. I didn't care. I keyed in my expenses in my phone and looked up again. I saw Will and Harry. And I walked closer. I saw Maruly. Weird. I thought she was already on the train back to Luzern. Turns out that the whole gang were Oldies (that's what they call themselves). They are AFSers on the Summer intake last year.

Most of them were Spanish speakers. The only NON Spanish speakers were Harry, a Japanese guy whom I forgot his name ( I'm so sorry!! ) and me. So basically I was just looking at them talking. And later, we walked to the river and sat by the river to continue the talks. I texted Franzi and told her that I will be an hour late home so that I could try to mingle around and meet new people. It was cold, yes, but somehow it felt nice. Even though I couldn't understand what they were talking most of the time, but to be with a group of people and sitting there enjoy nature, it was perfecto.

So I got on the 4.30pm Fast train back to Luzern, unlike every other day. Everyday I'd take the 3.06pm train and it would take almost 1 hour back to Luzern. Seriously. Christina, one of the oldies, took the same train as me and Maruly back to Luzern. And after reaching in Luzern, like every other day, I take another train back to Hasle.

When I got back, it was a little bit after 6pm but it was before 6.03pm. So I could say I was a bit punctual. And I got to my room. And I saw 'em.

2 letters, lying on my desk. With RM2 stamps on it. The "chop" on the stamp was the 1 Malaysia logo. I looked at it, and wanted to open it, but the family was already upstairs eating dinner. So I thought I'd open it later. When upstairs and ate dinner with the fam, and after the dinner, we went to Joel's school in Hasle to observe Julia's music class. I took the letters along with me cause I couldn't wait any longer.

And I still haven't get used to the fact that it's left-hand drive over here. You wouldn't believe how many times I got on the wrong side of the car. Joel's school is big. But I actually think that Cempaka is bigger. Well, Cempaka school compound is bigger, if you include the field. And Julia's voice is amazing. The teacher's voice was amazing, too, but she was more of a classical singer. Julia has a pop song voice, which I find very very very beautiful.

And now about the letter.

I tried to open the envelopes as gentle as possible, but I ended up ripping it. Sorry! It was actually birthday cards!! The first envelope that I open was from my 阿姨,姨丈,表哥,表嫂,and my 表姐. The card says NIECE on the cover, and inside they wrote me a really nice message. It was really a surprise to receive birthday cards from MALAYSIA. In the next envelope, was another birthday card. The first words I saw from the card was "Perfect parents", which then I know it's from my parents. Mom wrote me a message in Chinese inside, and it was from the whole fam: My parents and my bro. Really, I love it so so much!

Thanks again for the cards, Mom, dad, aunt, uncle, brother and cousins.

Orientation Camp

2nd - 4th March 2012

I went to the orientation camp for the AFSers on the exchange program. They had more than 2 camps in the whole Switzerland, and I was sent to Aarburg, along with Shu Chien, KC, Maruly, Catherine, Nicole, Ana, Yuka, Saho and Will from Deutschkurs.

Catherine, Pei San, Jun Khee, Panyada and I went to Migros to kill some time cause we had to wait 2 hours after our Deutschkurs to get on the train. Walked around and found a stationery shop, which I bought some stuff because I left my pencil case at home back in Malaysia. We went into Migros supermarket and I found Asian Curry instant noodles. I don't know if it tastes the same as Maggi Mee, but I'd really like to try it.

Okay so at 5pm, Catherine and I went to the train station along with those going to Hunibach's camp. Our train was supposed to be 6pm but then we had nothing to do, so we decided to take an hour earlier train and wait in Aarburg train station. The train was so packed, Catherine almost didn't get off the train when we reached. Surprisingly, Tina, one of the leaders for the orientation camp, saw me reading the AFS letter and came to us. Soon I met up with rest of the leaders, Rebecca, Ella and Davide. They were actually gonna play a prank on us, but then we were too early and we spoke to Tina, so it failed, but then they asked us to play along with the prank later on when they prank the others. The prank was that they were gonna speak only Swiss German to them and be very very very strict when they arrive. Plus, they weren't gonna be there to pick them up in the train station, and not helpful when they called to ask for directions. Catherine and I helped Davide to prepare dinner, and we started off with peeling and chopping onions. I teared up so badly just peeling the onions. At around 7pm, the rest of the group started arriving. They were so glad to reach there, and Catherine and I was supposed to go up to them and tell them to be quiet and put their stuff neatly in the room cause the leaders are very mean. Soon the group was a bit scared, and the atmosphere was awkward (well, funny to us and the leaders). After they took our phones, watches and all, they start to say that it was just a prank, and Rebecca, who pretended to be part of the us students, was actually one of the leaders.

Starting off by playing World Map, which we had to stand according to where our countries are and introduce ourselves. I introduced myself with the name "Moon" cause it's easier to remember for the others >< After that, we went in and played Fruit Salad, which was similar to Blow Wind, Blow. Then we had to say our name, and say another animal's name starting with the same letter with our name, and remember everyone's name. It was okay for me, just that the animals' name had to be in Deutsch, which was kind of a tongue twister. Dinner was served later, and it was pasta, which was what Catherine and I helped in the kitchen. They had a sauce, which was dark pink in colour, and a lot of people didn't take it cause it looked horrible, but it actually tasted awesome, cause Davide forced some onto my plate. Some of us did presentations for our country, but not all. Only us Malaysians, Honduras, and Thailand. Me, Shu Chien and KC brought some stuffs from Malaysia. I brought the Malaysian flag, postcards and a RM1 note. Shu Chien and KC brought their traditional costumes, which was baju kurung and baju melayu. I wore the Merdeka T-Shirt from school.

The next morning was awful! Someone was shouting early in the morning and it really pissed me off. As you all know, I'm not the morning person. But, this is the time to test my tolerance, so I just continued sleeping until around 7am. Breakfast was served and it was some kind of Museli. It was pink in colour, with bananas and apples. It wasn't the best meal. After that we played the game Evolution. We had to start off as an egg, and play rock paper scissors (in Deutsch) to other eggs, and if you win, you evolve into a chick, and continue with other chicks. If you lose, you have to return to a lower level. After chick was chicken, after chicken was penguins, after penguins was elephants, after elephant was Superman, and the first Superman wins. Later, we had a screen-playing game, which we were seperated into different groups, and each group were given a scene. We were asked to talk about what went wrong with the scene, and what should we change to make it better. We were given "An exchange student was late in class, and there was a test, and she didn't understand a single thing, and the teacher was lecturing her in front of the class, and she was writing back home about how awful it is for her here." If I remembered correctly, my group was KC, Laura, Merly, and Catherine. After that we had lunch, and we had Potatoes with cheese. After lunch was the screen-playing game (continued) and after that we went out to play. We started off with Funky chicken. It was like " 1 2 3 4, 5 6 7 8, Can you do the funky chicken? What's the funky chicken? Funky chicken, funk funk funky chicken, funk funk funk chicken" or something like that. I forgot, hehe. After that we had a session of AFS rules, and later we went to a big field, but there was cow shit at some places, and just took photos and played the British Bulldog. The Bulldogs have to carry someone and say 1,2,3 BULLDOG in order to make the other person a bulldog. After that we went back and showered, and prepared for dinner. Before dinner, we played a game, called something planeterium. We were again seperated into groups, and I was in the deaf group. We had to complete a task, and everyone was seperated into different groups again, where a group consists of 1 deaf, 1 mute, 1 blind and 1 without hands. We had to draw something representing a word, and after that we had to guess another's drawing. It was nice, and KC was the loudest of them all. After that we had to write down 3 keywords of why host families hosted us. Then after that it was dinner. It was the best dinner cause it was rice with carbonara sauce and mushrooms. YUM. After dinner we played Honey I Love You. It was hilarious! Then, it was the Drugs and Sex talk.

Okay. That was awkward.

Well, at least for me it was awkward. The boys and girls were seperated, and Rebecca & Ella were giving the talk to us girls. Apparently Swiss culture is that it's okay to lose your virginity before marriage, and AFS was not stopping us, but just wanted us to be safe if we REALLY did DO IT. It's already awkward for me to be typing this out, cause I know that, mom and dad, you guys will be reading this. And then we were each given a condom. I know. IT WAS SUPER WEIRD! And they were teaching us how to wear it, on a banana. I know I'm 18 already, but this is super awkward to me. And they asked us to touch it, not the banana, but the condom. It was....slimy. And they were telling us about it is perfectly normal to discuss this topic in public, because Swiss people are very open. We were given the chance to ask questions about this topic, although most of us were to awkward to ask. After that Davide came down and answered some of our questions, as a guy's thinking. It was awkward. Yes.

After that we practically just partied after supper (Chocolate and Vanila pudding). They were playing party songs and we were all dancing. They also played Spanish songs, and Sabina and Will taught me how to dance Salsa. HAHA it was fun! They really REALLY can move!! And then we all danced to the Brazilian song, Ai Se Eu Te Pego. It really is a catchy song, and it is now stuck in my head. KC was like doing his own moves, which was... indescribable HAHAHA. We partied till midnight, and I couldn't take it anymore. Went up to sleep.

The next day, breakfast was the Swiss bread that we made last night, with jam. Michael and Catherine brought Vegemite from Aussie and Marmite from New Zealand to put on the bread. Well, we Malaysians like it, but every other people hated it. After breakfast, we continued to write another Dear Me letter. In this letter, we can ask everyone else to write, and we were all busy writing. Well, I didn't write, cause I was doing some Origami with Shu Chien, and the Japaneses. But soon I started to give other people to write my Dear Me letter. After that, we were all separated to clean up the whole house, and I was in Kitchen duty. After that we continued with the letters. At the same time, we were snapping photos and transferring photos into Davide's computer. And so after everything, we went out for some activties, energizers and games because they were about to hand in the house to the owner. It was a scout house, by the way. We played the Monster Chicken game, then the game which you cant laugh, but if you do you had to become a chicken and make other people laugh. Then we played Ninja, which was like Pepsi Cola but this is to hit the hands of the other person. After that we played a game, I forgot the name but it was with apples. Someone was supposed to stand in the middle, and everyone had to pass around an apple behind our backs. The person in the middle was supposed to guess who had the apple. We were supposed to chomp on the apple when the person in the middle wasn't looking. It was a bit disgusting because we had to pass the apple around and it had like saliva on it, and we had to eat the apple which was touched by every other people. After that game, the camp ended and we all went back to the train station. Maruly, Carolina and I took the train back to Luzern.

Turning LEGAL

So now, I am a legal adult.

I can now watch 18+ movies in the cinema without worrying that I might be kicked out of the cinema. I can now legally drink alcohol. I can now....

But this also means that I'm not a kid anymore. I dunno, I just feel like, I'm not ready to be on my own. I still wanna be the little girl that needs my parents. I still wanna run free and wild like all children.

I guess this is a wake up call for me. I am now an adult. I should be more independent and I should be more responsible. I should be strong when facing any difficulties and I should NOT cry that much anymore. I'm gonna turn over a new leaf.

But then I should not lose myself. Hmmm, how to say this..? I should still be me, and I hope that I won't turn into a total stranger to all my family and friends back in Malaysia. I need to keep what's Cheng Mun in me.

So, this is my first year celebrating my birthday NOT in KUALA LUMPUR. It's like.... I don't know how many kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur. It feels weird, but it was a great birthday. It was way better than I expected.

Well I received a lot of birthday wishes on 29th Feb. Mostly because it was already 1st March in Malaysia. Switz is 7 hours behind so technically I'm 7 hours younger than usual :D Qiang, Tepung and Ding made a skype call, and it was LOL. Pei San, Jun Khee and Leelee skype called me and sang happy birthday to me :D Thanks guys :)

And so, early in the morning when I went up for breakfast, my HF wished me happy birthday. Took the train as usual to Luzern and then change to Olten. When I met up with Pei San and Laura, they wished me Happy birthday and hugged me (awww). Maruly, who was in the same train with me from Luzern to Olten, was surprised and didn't know that it was my birthday today. And so we walked to the Klubsschule. Jun Khee mouthed "Happy birthday" when we reached, and Camilo wished me a belated birthday 'cause he thought my birthday was yesterday. When he wished, of course, other people realized and wished me, too. Class was usual, and we had a break. Jun Khee and Pei San bought a cake from Migros as a birthday present to me. THANK YOU again :D. We then went to Coop and search for Malaysian Maggi Mee. But unfortunately, they don't have it. Oh yeah, I had a hot dog and a Poulet Wrap for lunch. It costed me about Fr 9.90. Bleh. It was delicious, though. When we went back to the Klubsschule, William wished my Happy birthday and said that he has a present for me but he left it at home. And when we went into the class, we changed teacher. They all requested to sing Happy birthday to me, which was really nice :D And the awkward moment when everyone is singing Happy Birthday and you don't know what to do. They sang in German, which I forgot the lyrics hehehe. The Deutschlehrerin said that 18th birthday is very important in Switzerland. For 18 years olds, they can now drive, drink liquor, and they can make decisions without parents anymore. Usually people have a big party for their 18th birthday, but since I had my party earlier in Malaysia and I've just arrived, this is seriously superb for me. After school, I took the train back to Luzern, as usual, and took the CORRECT train in platform 11A. I went to Schulpfheim and met up with my soon-to-be classmates, Anja, Karin and Megi, and my soon-to-be schoolmates, Raphael and Pascal. They gave me a Balloon and a Chocolate Rabbit. It was really really sweet of them :D We went to the Cafe next to the train station and we ordered some drinks there. They are really really friendly, and CRAZY! Don't get me wrong, they're crazy in a good way :D So around 5.50pm, we left and I took the train back home.

And back at home.

I was home alone at first. Then the family came home. They had dinner ( I didn't cause I was super full) and I joined them later. We did talk about Malaysia and all, and they were eating RICE today. Later they were lighting candles on cupcakes, which was baked by Joel, helped by Franzi during lunch. It was so sweet of them!!! They wrote a birthday card for me, and sang birthday song. I was so surprised!!! The troubles they went through for my birthday, I feel so touched!

And.......... CLIMAX.

It was 8pm and I went down to my room to pack for the Orientation camp tomorrow. SUDDENLY mom and dad skyped me. They woke up SO EARLY IN THE MORNING to wish me happy birthday in person *add tears* !!!!! And so I told them about my adventures so far in der Schweiz. We talked for almost 1 hour. It feels so good to talk to them. AFS said calling back will make us homesick, but so far, calling back home just makes me feel happier. I dunno I guess I'm just used to telling my parents about special events everyday. Thank you mom and dad, and I know you WILL be reading this cause you guys STALK me so much. Love you guy!! Send my LOVE to Kit too.

And so Conclusion.

This has been a great and unforgettable 18th birthday. My first birthday away from home, in Switzerland.

With my soon-to-be schoolmates

With my classmates from the Klubsschule

William and Harry

Birthday present from Anja, Karin and Megi

Classmates!
